Obituary of Roy Joseph McCann

Passed away peacefully, at home at the age of 83, after a 2.5-year battle from a very life altering stroke, and prostate cancer. Loving husband to Violet (nee Kostuk). Cherished father of Sean (Maria) and Kit, and predeceased by daughter Shaelynn (1970). Treasured grandfather to Patrick, Avery (Bella), Tia (Amir) and Lianna (Sam). Beloved son of the late Chris and Gloria (nee Roy) McCann, and son-in-law of the late John and late Katharine Kostuk. Dear brother of the late Patricia (late Ronald) Westrop and Andrew (late Colleen) McCann, all of Windsor. Brother-in-law of the late Jean (late Raymon) Nadeau, late June (late Bud) Romp, John (late Mary Jane) Kostuk, Katharine (Ron) Jarvis, Marie (Mark) Kent, late Jimmy (Nancy) Kostuk, and Kenneth Kostuk (1st wife late Valerie Ditch; present partner Eve Whitehead) across Canada and the United States. He is survived by his godson Scott (Catherine) Westrop, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and many extended family members in Canada and the United States. Roy was a proud member of local 444 and retired after working for 30 years at Chrysler Canada, and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. He was a founding member of the Pillette Golf Association (PGA), and very active past member of the Sun Palour Barbershop Chorus (now Essex Vocal Express) for 50 years. Though he passionately loved his beautiful bride Violet, he was also passionate about playing many rounds of golf with his sons, grandsons, close friend Joe Jakubo, and many other golf fanatic friends. As well, he was the biggest fan when attending his grandchildren’s sporting events including golf, hockey, soccer, badminton, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, and cross-country running. He was also an enthusiastic fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Windsor Spitfires as a season pass holder for more than 25 years and founding member of the “Grumpy Old Men” who fervently cheered on the Spits whether they were winning or losing, while being known as the “Candy Man” who regularly distributed treats to his friends and “new” friends he found on his walking adventures in the arena. He was an extremely avid tinkerer and fixer-upper, who leveraged his electronics technician education to repair just about anything after a bit of trial and error, at approximately a third of the cost of the store-bought item (i.e., he was thrifty but loving every minute of it). Additionally, Roy was a devoted Christian who regularly attended Parkwood Gospel Church for more than 40 years, and distributed candy to as many small and “big” kids as he could, as a gift in appreciation of their attendance at the church service. Family and friends are welcome to visit at Windsor Chapel - Banwell Chapel (11677 Tecumseh Rd. E., Tecumseh, ON) on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, as well as Saturday from 11am-12 noon. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 12 noon. Cremation will follow, then placement within his new mahogany box home that a cherished friend had hand-crafted using “recycled” wood. In celebration of his life, all attendees are asked to visit while dressed in their best golf outfit (the more colourful, the better!!!), because this is just the way he enjoyed life and a good game of golf. The family would like to thank all the friendly staff at Hôtel Dieu Grace Healthcare (Prince Road) Hospital who ever so patiently assisted Roy through his many physiotherapy sessions and the friendly staff at Enable Physio, as well as Dr. Springer and his staff at the Metropolitan Hospital Cancer Clinic and Roy’s family doctor (Dr. Alfiya). Donations in Roy’s memory can be made to Parkwood Gospel Church to help in their outreach programs in our community.
